Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 1 Timothy 4:1-5
Despite the trappings of modern technology and the great gap of years between, our time and Paul’s are inextricably bound together. Point is that periodically throughout the age of the church the faithful can expect the defection and active opposition of some who have professed to be Christians.
Through the last 2,000 years of history, some religious leaders have sought to impose vegetarianism on their followers, while others have taught abstention from certain foods, such as meat, on certain days.
This unfortunate aspect of the present age was foretold by the Holy Spirit. False teachers forbid as evil what God has allowed, and command as a duty what he has left indifferent. But nothing justifies an improper use of things; and nothing will be good to us, unless we seek by prayer for the Lord’s blessing upon it.
